NSPRI IN CONJUNCTION WITH IWEI TRAINED WOMEN IN GARUN BABA, KADA, KADAWA AND RANO IN KANO STATE ON POST-HARVEST HANDLING AND PRODUCTION OF HIGH QUALITY RICE GRAINS THROUGH VALUE ADDITION

Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) in conjunction with Wali Empowerment Initiative (IWEI) trained women on post harvest handling and production of high quality rice grains through value addition.

The objectives of the training included the following amongst others;

  • To empower women/ farmers using appropriate NSPRI’s technologies for the production of high quality rice grains.

  • To reduce drastically losses encountered by rice farmers during postharvest handling.

  • To introduce participants to various technologies available for producing high quality rice grains.

  • To equip participants with technical know-how for minimizing postharvest losses of rice grains through value-addition and packaging.

  • To improve the quality of rice produced by farmers for local and international market with the view of improving their livelihood.

The training was held between 29th June to 10th July 2015 at three locations in Kano State namely; Garun-Baba, Kadawa and Rano respectively. The training was participatory in nature, it was 100 percent practical.

The postharvest handling and processing of paddy rice from washing to packaging stage were thoroughly demonstrated by resource persons in all the locations.

 

FINAL RESOLUTIONS ON THE MEETING BETWEEN NIGERIAN STORED PRODUCTS RESEARCH INSTITUTE/CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA/FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS ON POSTHARVEST TRAINING AND VALUE ADDITION FOR AGRICULTURAL LOAN BENEFICIARIES

Sequel to the meeting held on 25th June 2015, these resolutions were made;

  • Confirmation of Training Date. New date has been fixed on 9th -10th of Sept. to accommodate Farmers for their busy schedule in the month of August and also to equip them with postharvest techniques and value addition knowledge before Oct. harvesting period.

  • Payment should be made to the following account details:

    Amount per participant – N15,000


  • Deadline for payment is on 31st Aug., 2015.

  • Forward the amount paid and payer’s name via SMS to 08037084591.

  • AFAN President will organize a meeting for his members to be sensitized next week for the training workshop. The meeting will be attended by Mr. S. O Dirisu and Engr. (Dr.) F. F. Olayemi.

  • Publicity -- Live broadcast on Kwara TV will be handled by NSPRI, 2nd Sept. 2015 and Jingles start from 25th of Aug., 2015. Flyers to be distributed by Commercial and Micro-finance banks to sensitize farmers on the training. The Kwara State Government through the Consultant on SMEs to finance every aspect of the publicity.

HIGHLIGHT OF RECENT INFRACTSTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENTS IN NSPRI

Professor Femi Peters resumed duty as the Executive Director of NSPRI less than 2 years ago. His administration has brought some face-lift to the Institute.

Some of the highlights are as follow:


  • Re-roofing of Laboratory Complex with modern long-span aluminum tower products.

  • Improving the security system through the provision of street light along the road network at the Headquarters.

  • Linking of the institute’s headquarters into high speed wireless internet service. Similar gesture is also on-going at Institute’s Zonal offices and outstations.

  • Making staff offices more conducive by providing air conditioner into all offices within the Headquarters. Also the offices in administrative complex were renovated to give them a modern outlook.

  • Beautification of the Institute’s environment and creating room for well-organized car parking system.
